Don't you remember?

Colt and I were praying the other night about a little getaway that was supposed to happen this weekend. We were praying that all the things would fall into place, that the weather would cooperate, etc. (Spoiler alert: The trip isn’t happening.)

As we were praying, I started talking about disappointment. I told God I did not want to partner with a spirit of disappointment. It would be a huge bummer if the trip got cancelled, yes, but I didn’t want to sit in disappointment and host a pity party for myself.

That has been a temptation this past year for many of us — to partner with disappointment. To claim it. To even expect it. Things not working out = par for the course for 2020 (and 2021).

So do we just complain until it’s all over?

When I read about the Israelites, I want to shout through history and say, “Don’t you guys remember?? Don’t you remember that you were brought out of slavery in Egypt? Don’t you remember that the sea was literally parted for you to walk through and then, at the perfect time, was released to swallow up your enemies? Don’t you remember that you were hungry and the Lord gave you actual food from the sky?”

But what about us? If I were reading my own story, I would say, “Claire, don’t you remember?? Don’t you remember that you were healed of anxiety? Don’t you remember that you’ve been set free from self-righteousness? Don’t you remember all the times you’ve needed direction and you’ve heard the Lord speak to you — in dreams and through prophetic words from others and as you read Scripture? Don’t you remember all of the ways the Lord has brought you through hard things?”

Our already semi-shut down world is being shut down in more ways with this weather. So let’s use it! What if we reflected on what God has done in our lives and thanked him for it? What if we spent intentional time during these snow days in prayer and intercession? What if we asked God to speak to us about someone and then texted them an encouraging word? We do not have to waste this time. We do not have to complain and murmur as the Israelites did. Believers, let’s remember what the Lord has done, let’s meditate on who he is, and let’s pray.
