God's Provision and Rest

As I was doing some preparations for a group that I’m leading this semester, I had a sweet revelation that the Lord gave to me as I read in Exodus.

As the Israelites were led out of Egypt, God demonstrated his provision over and over. One of those ways was in his provision of food. He gave them manna from the sky and they were to gather it each day. Just enough for that day. However, on the sixth day, they were to gather a double portion, enough for that day as well as the seventh day. He wanted the seventh day to be a day of Sabbath, a day of rest. Of course, there were still people who went out on the seventh day to find manna. But guess what they found? Nothing. They worked in vain because there was none to be found.

So - here’s the revelation - THERE IS REST BUILT INTO THE RHYTHM OF GOD’S PROVISION.

When he provides, his way naturally provides rest. Of course, we have the choice to step into that and to trust that, just like the Israelites had a choice. When we call God our Provider, we are not only declaring that he will provide what we need, we are declaring that we will trust him enough to REST.
