Unprecedented

Unprecedented: never known or done before

Precedent: an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances

We’re all tired of hearing the word “unprecedented.” But when I read it in “The Circle Maker” a few weeks ago, I began to think of it differently.

“If you are not open to the unprecedented, you will repeat history. If you are open to the unprecedented, you will change history.“

In the context of this book, the author was talking about prayer and how through prayer, we can become open to the unprecedented. We can pray big, bold, and risky prayers. Prayers that are beyond our resources. Prayers that don’t make sense.

When the Israelites saw the manna the Lord had provided, they said, “What is it?” This was not a substance previously known to them. They didn’t think, “Oh, it’s that stuff that I’ve heard my grandparents talk about.” No, this was unprecedented.

I believe our unprecedented times in the natural are an indicator to the unprecedented times in the supernatural. As we experience unprecedented things in the visible world, I believe God is inviting us into unprecedented things in the invisible world.

A quick example. Homeschooling my kids for a year was an unprecedented event in the natural. In the supernatural, God was inviting me into a deeper need and love of scripture, prayer, and worship. I have experienced unprecedented things in my spiritual life while also walking through unprecedented things in the physical.

God wants to do unprecedented things in your life and with you. Things you couldn’t have ever imagined or predicted. Things you don’t even have a grid for. Things that don’t seem possible when you look at your current circumstance.

Manna from the sky was not on the Israelites’ list of possible solutions. It didn’t fit any kind of formula. The Bible is full of story after story like this. And it’s still what God does. God shows us his third way. God does unprecedented things.
